When a family moves into a new home there are hundreds of jobs that must be done. Fortunately, most of these jobs can be completed by trained professionals like carpenters, electricians, plumbers and moving men. But what can the average homeowner do? Is he just supposed to sit on his hands? In this article we are going to discuss one simple project that any homeowner can complete on his own.
Window blinds are an easy and affordable way to give your home privacy, personality and to control the light. They are also a project most homeowners choose to tackle on their own. How to start?
Before you take a trip to your local home improvement centre, you must take measurements, both the height and the width of each window that requires a blind. Take these measurements from the inside of the window frame.
At the home improvement centre, let the window treatment expert know exactly how you recorded these measurements. More often than not, the windows will be standard sizes and you will have many options from which to choose. A word of warning: do not make the decision on your own. Just because you are installing the blinds, do not make the mistake of thinking that you have the authority to select them. After all, blinds are decorative as well as utilitarian and your spouse should have a say in the look of the home.
After you have both agreed on the blinds, it is time to put them in. The process is simple. All you will need is a power drill and a step ladder or a sturdy chair on which to stand. Since window blinds are hung from brackets, all you have to do is screw these simple metal brackets into the inside of the window frame and hang the blinds from the main rod. The task should only take a few minutes for each window.
